MAF recently held its annual Donor Recognition Event at the offices of SmithGroup Detroit, located in the historic Guardian Building. The purpose of the event was to announce and celebrate MAF’s 2022 Scholarship recipients and MAF’s 2022 Evans Graham Preservation Award Winner, as well as to thank MAF’s donors for their contributions to MAF.
The event, held April 28, 2022, was the first live MAF donor recognition event since the beginning of the pandemic. Attendees enjoyed refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to mingle with other guests.
MAF President Doug Kueffner, AIA, kicked off the event and was joined by MAF past president and MAF Scholarship Jury Chair Tim Casai, FAIA, who introduced the 2022 MAF scholarship winners in attendance. Tim acknowledged the accomplishments and high quality of the portfolios students submitted with their applications. He also invited the scholarship winners to encourage their fellow classmates to apply for scholarships in future years.
Doug then introduced MAF’s 2022 Evans Graham Preservation Award Winner, People for Palmer Park (PFPP), which was awarded the grant to support the restoration of the Palmer Log Cabin Kitchen in Detroit’s Palmer Park. PFPP representatives Rochelle Lento, President; Barbara Barefield, Board Member and Grant writer; and Jason M. Fligger, volunteer Architect for the project attended the reception.
Rochelle thanked MAF for the award and briefly discussed their project. When asked what the grant means to their project, Rochelle responded, “This grant gives us a burst of energy and the ability to continue some very critical interior work on the log cabin.”
