The AIA Michigan President’s Scholarship was started to salute outstanding leadership in future architects, acknowledge outstanding community and political leadership in future architects, and to provide recognition of past AIAM Presidents. Each year, we honor the founders of this scholarship.
In 2023, we are honoring Norm Hamann, Sr. AIA, 1987 President of AIA Michigan.
Known for his attention to detail and understated leadership style, Norm Hamann Sr. was a role model for AIA Michigan leaders and for young architects including his son, Norm Hamman Jr. AIA.
Norm Hamman Sr. attended the University of Michigan graduating in 1959. As a cofounder of Diekema Hamann Architects in Kalamazoo, he grew a successful firm that continues today. His service to the profession spanned decades and he became AIA Michigan President in 1987. In 1990, he won the AIA Michigan Golf Medal. Norm has been recognized by his peers as the epitome of integrity, and a model leader.
Norm passed away May 31, 2022 at the age of 86.
