The AIA Michigan President’s Scholarship was started to salute outstanding leadership in future architects; acknowledge outstanding community and political leadership in future architects; and to provide recognition of past AIA Michigan (AIAM) Presidents. Each year, we honor the Founders of this scholarship. In 2025 we are honoring architects Robert Greager, FAIA and the late Leslie Tincknell, FAIA-E. Both were part of the 17 Founding Presidents of the Scholarship in 1992.
Les Tincknell, FAIA, from the AIA Saginaw chapter, was AIAM President in 1974. His longstanding career and service to both AIA Michigan and MAF is legendary. He served on the MAF Board for 30 years and as treasurer, built the endowment that now provides $100,000 a year in scholarships and grants. He also championed the MAF Scholarship program and generously funded his own scholarship, which today provides $10,000 a year to a deserving architecture student. He remains the role model for AIAM and MAF leadership for the following generations.
Robert Greager FAIA, from the AIA Detroit chapter, was AIAM President in 1985. Respected for his strong opinions, Bob’s leadership in AIAM spanned over 30 years. During his AIA leadership tenure, he was a partner at both Neumann/Smith and at SmithGroup. He passion and energy characterized his approach to both AIA service and architecture.
