Bringing Community Vision to Life:
MAF Scholarship Winner
Asia K. Williams

10/04/2024

Asia K. Williams’ inspiration for pursuing a career in architecture came from downtown Detroit’s skyline. “Growing up in Detroit, I noticed the difference between the abandoned buildings in my neighborhood and the tall, amazing architecture downtown,” she said. “It motivated me to envision a future where my neighborhood could be transformed with architecture, driving my passion to pursue a career in architecture to bring that vision to life.”

Asia, a graduate student at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture & Community Development (SACD) is the 2024 recipient of the AIA Michigan President’s Scholarship. Founded by AIA Michigan past presidents, the scholarship is for graduate students in architecture that have demonstrated leadership in professional, community or public service activities (MAF administers the scholarship).  The MAF Scholarship Jury noted Asia’s active community engagement and excellent references were among the reasons for selecting her for the award.

“In my scholarship application personal statement, I highlighted my deep-rooted interest in architecture, sparked by growing up in Detroit and decided to pursue an architecture career to help bring development to low-income neighborhoods,” Asia added. “I also mentioned my experience interning at a local architectural firm, where I gained hands-on knowledge and further fueled my passion for urban revitalization. Having a leadership role at my university’s architecture club and focusing my thesis on community engagement drove me to organize community design workshops and volunteer projects aimed at improving local neighborhoods.”

Asia recently completed her Master of Architecture degree at UDM SACD, and returned to the school this Fall to pursue a Master of Community Development degree. (click here to watch the YouTube interview with Asia, courtesy of UDM SACD’s website and the Downtown Boxing Gym).

“What I enjoy most about my architectural degree program is the opportunity to blend youth engagement and architectural development in the context of urban revitalization,” added Asia. “My architectural thesis focused on utilizing youth engagement to transform low-income neighborhoods, and my Master of Community Development will allow me to deepen my understanding of community dynamics and development strategies. This interdisciplinary approach will equip me with the skills to not only design beautiful structures but also create sustainable, thriving communities, furthering the passion ignited by my thesis work.”

Post-graduation, Asia has a strong preference for designing urban revitalization projects, particularly in residential and mixed-use developments. “I am especially interested in creating affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, and community program solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, incorporating sustainable design principles to enhance the quality of life for residents. By focusing on these types of projects, I hope to bring positive change to neighborhoods like the one I grew up in, blending community development with innovative architectural design.”

As part of their MAF scholarship application, students must also submit a personal portfolio. Asia included a variety of architectural projects and design work that showcased her skills, creativity, and passion for the field, with examples of studio projects where she explored different design concepts and solutions, emphasizing her ability to think critically and innovatively about architectural challenges. She also incorporated excerpts from her architectural thesis, highlighting her research and ideas related to urban revitalization and community development.

Adds Asia, “Winning a MAF scholarship was meaningful to me, by not only providing crucial financial support for my education but also by validating my passion and commitment to architecture. The scholarship eased the burden of tuition, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial concerns. It also connected me with a network of professionals and mentors who offered guidance and opportunities for growth. This support and recognition have been important in helping me pursue my dream of revitalizing neighborhoods like the one I grew up in, making the scholarship a pivotal step in my architectural journey.”

MAF’s mission is to advance awareness of how architecture enriches life. How does Asia think architecture enriches life? “Architecture enriches life by providing functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that enhance our daily experiences,” she said. “It shapes our interactions, influences our mood, and creates a sense of identity and community. Through thoughtful design, architecture can promote sustainability, improve health and well-being, and inspire creativity and innovation. It plays a crucial role in shaping the built environment to meet the diverse needs of individuals and communities, ultimately contributing to a more vibrant and cohesive society.”

Asia adds, “What I love most about architecture is its ability to shape and transform human experiences. The profession allows for creative expression while addressing practical needs. I am particularly fascinated by how thoughtful design can improve the quality of life, create community connections, and revitalize low-income areas. Buildings and spaces are not just structures; they tell stories, evoke emotions, and reflect the identity of a place. The potential to create environments that inspire, uplift, and bring people together is what drives my passion for architecture.”
