MAF is pleased to announce that nonprofit organization the Davison Historical Society and their project, the Woolley Veterinary Office in Davison, Michigan, is the 2026 recipient of the MAF Evans Graham Historic Preservation Grant.
The $30,000 grant will support restoration of the building’s cedar shake roof. Addressing the roof deterioration is an essential part of preserving the building and enabling continued public use of the space. The current roof is failing and is actively threatening the building and the irreplaceable collection of original instruments, records, and furnishings.
The Woolley Veterinary Office Building is the only known intact early 20th century veterinary office in the United States and is recognized as a nationally significant historic resource.
The building was originally constructed in 1893 and built as a candy store and ladies’ lending library. It became the veterinary office of Dr. Floyd Woolley in 1904, and in 1931, the building moved to his residential property, which is the building’s current location. The Davison Historical Society acquired the building in 1991 and installed a new cedar shake roof at that time.
Restoration of the roof will protect important educational materials, support community programming, and ensure that the annual Woolley Festival, which celebrates the community’s history, continues for years to come. The full roof replacement will use historically appropriate materials and installation methods, including Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau (CCBS) certified shakes, premium underlayment, and copper flashing. With the restoration, historical accuracy is important to help provide long‑term sustainability and ensure that the building remains a safe, stable, and authentic educational resource.
